It sounds like 'shin splints' which is a generic catchall for lower limb pain. It's quite normal to experience this when you're new to running. Some advise complete rest while others suggest training through it as it will eventually get better once all your muscles, tendons and ligaments toughen up. Ouch! I bet those stairs are hurting too...
Anyway, probably best to go and see a GP or osteo or a professional in case it's something else. Good luck!

Here's a thread on the Cool Running website that might be useful:

If it is shin splint's don't exercise especially running up & down the stair's, just do upper body workout. Rest it good & take it easy for a while.

We had a lot of people come down with shin splints in the Navy, because of all the marching we had to do. Unfortunately there was no rest for the wicked as the medics were absolute *insert your own descriptive*... you had to be bleeding out of your eyeballs or barf up a lung to get let out of anything! (hate!!!). We had a lot of people in a lot of pain. Me one of them, but I had blisters. I had almost no skin on my feet and they still would not turn me in! Sorry, rant over now :)

Hope you are feeling better soon jo!

I've got the dreaded shin splints too. I kinda expected it would happen. Even experienced runner can get it, from over training or simply being out of the loop for a long time.

If in fact it is shin splints you have, there is nothing the doc can do or tell you that you won’t get out of the above link. I hope you did not pat too much.

I'll be using both the rest and pushing it method. Hope you’re feeling much better now.

This is the point where a lot of runners quit...It not need be the case...beat the shin splints and your just about there as a runner/jogger
