I just got a free gym pass or pass to a class at my gym because it's near my b'day (I used to be a member). I joined for 3 months last time... but I'm thinking it's a lot of money. The fee is for unlimited gym/classes/pool:

3 months $279
6 months $494
12 months $863

or

10 pass $140

I'm quite interested in a few of the classes (pilates, yoga, step class & fitball), but it still seems quite expensive (I also have to pay for transport whether it be petrol or bus tickets to get there because it's not near home or work).

What do you all think?

That is a lot of money, Madz. I pay $69 per month for mine and don't make the most of it cos I also do outdoor running and TKD twice per week, but it was great over the winter months when it was too cold/wet to go outdoors.

If you're seriously contemplating joining a gym, and I know this is a big step for you ;) :P I'd shop around for one - you might find one closer to home, cheaper, longer opening hours etc.
Just keep moving! And don't be lazy...

oh is it that obvious? :D i thought i was a regular gym junkie...

i'm sure i can find it for less... maybe i should check out fitness first or curves. the best thing about this particular gym though is that it is very private. most of the time there are only 1 or 2 other people in the gym, and the classes have about 15 people max, but the instructors are very good.

hmm at those prices I couldn't afford it.

Definitely use the free pass and get a feel of the gym.

Yesterday I popped into my local FF. I didn't like it at all. I just wanted to make an enquiry as to prices and before I knew it I was feeling out these forms just to step into the gym. They then made me wait for a consultant. At that stage I was feeling very uncomfortable and pressured. Why they couldn't tell me the prices over the counter beats the hell out of me. Anyway, this smooth talking sales guy tries to talk me into to joining. I had to sit through the sales pitch to find out pricing. I then said I can't afford that, and felt like I was being mocked. I just got up and walked out. I will never go to FF again.

When I can finally afford to go to a gym I won't be choosing FF.

But do what feels right for you. If you can afford those prices and like the idea of privacy than go for it. Even if its on a trial basis.

I AM JOINING A GYM FOR THE FIRST TIME IN AGES. I AM DOING EXERCISE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN ALMOST A YEAR (not including 'boy exercise' and shopping). WHO IS EXCITED FOR ME Y'ALL?!

hehe I've decided to get the 3 month $279 membership starting at the end of next week (when i get all my uni assignments done, for the time being). I will aim to attend 2-3 classes a week, and use the gym 2 times a week. If by some miracle I am actually fit by the time the next soccer season comes around, I will finally take up my friends' offer and join their indoor soccer team also.

I'm so excited/sh-tting myself at the same time :? :D

Going to the gym tomorrow (have one free pass) to test the waters on the treadmill for 45min or so... then going back on wednesday to buy my 3 month membership. First proper exercise this year... I might get my measurements taken too, if I can. Excited :D
