I love this show I think it is one of the best show's on atm, the only problem is that I have to tape the show & watch it the next day coz if hubby hears it he wont sleep at all he gets up really early in the morning, so he goes to bed earlier than I do.

What a deliciously wicked show! I've only caught a few eps but have loved those I've seen.

Never watched it, but I find the controversy around it terribly amusing! All these people who say it should be banned - seriously, you don't have to watch it!!!!

Really? What's so bad about it? :?

I agree Marti - there's this thing called Self Censorship and people should do it more often rather than complaining about a tv show.

The name, for one. The censored. The attitude toward censored. The view that it's really just porn. Mostly the censored. ;) People don't like that sort of thing... Somehow I doubt they are the target audience...

my husband (who is American) cannot believe we show this show on normal TV. Its on cable over there because nothing like that would EVER get played on normal TV.

Appart from the censored scene I love the show & quite funny too. Yes the show has a bit to much boobies showing other than that it has a good story line & I havent missed an episiode yet.

Wonder if it will be one of those shows where it gets axed after one season?

It'll depend mostly on the Americans, not so much on what we think.

How it works is: An average episode of a high quality American tv show costs about $1m to make. All those costs are eaten up by advertisers, since there are a lot of people in the US, and so a lot of people watch tv and they can make enough money to cover the costs. They then sell it overseas, and because they've already made their money back and then some, they can sell it really cheap, like about $10 000 per episode.

An average episode of a high quality Australian tv show costs about $80 000 to make. All these costs have to be covered by the network, in the hope that they will be made back. But there aren't as many people in Australia, so the advertising isn't worth as much. So unless a show gets very high ratings right from the start, it's simply not worth the effort. Buy a cheap American show that gets almost the same audience, and you're making more money.

As long as Californication continues to be made and gets a moderate audience here, they'll keep showing it here. Something like The Cooks, on the other hand, may even have had more viewers than Californication has (I don't know if that's true or not), but either way it wasn't financially viable to keep making it.

Sucks, hey?

The Cooks was Aussie, I think.

A show still has to find an audience on American tv too - generally it depends on what network it shows on, like here. Firefly, for example, was a complicated show made for Fox, so it didn't get enough ratings to be worth it, whereas if it had aired on a small cable channel the ratings it got would have been sufficient. Same as how here a thing mihgt air on ABC until it finds an audience and then get poached by a commercial network.
