Anti-spam techniques

Postby John » Sun Dec 27, 2009 6:36 am

Recently this place has been significantly spammed, I'm thinking that there should be a system where a new user can't start more than 3 new subjects in the first 24 hours of being a member. What do people think of this?

The spam has been particularly bad over the last 24 hours.

I've banned an entire internet resource distribution network because the spammers kept changing IP addresses to get around being banned. Luckily they all came from Ripe.net so it was just a matter of banning the entire range of IPs owned by that network. I hope this doesn't affect any genuine users of the forum. Unfortunately Ripe.net has an abuse policy that basically washes their hands of any spam sent from their network so there wasn't any other choice but to ban everyone using them. If there's a problem with this please let me know.

I'm afraid I don't have time to delete all of the hundreds of spam posts that have been made right now because I'm working on my thesis. Hopefully I and the other mods will be able to clear them all up over the next couple of days.

cheers,
Ali

Yes it is frustrating ! I certainly appreciate the time and effort the mods have put in to keep this place "spam" free :) However at times, its just inevitable. Thanks to all the mods :)

No worries! My OCD couldn't rest unless I deleted and banned all the spam humanly possible from the forum!

I think I've deleted everything from this latest wave. Around 700 spam posts! My deleting finger is tired now so I'll call it a day. If I've missed any spam please PM me or use the report post button to let the mods know.

cheers,
Ali
