Food/diet recommendations for diabetes treatment. Any tips?

Postby dannyboi » Thu Jan 10, 2008 2:47 pm

I was wondering if anyone could provide me with useful links concerning the foods that would be be bad or good for diabetes.

I'm asking because my dad is a diabetic and that leaves me in the danger zone as well. Having a recent check, his bloody glucose level was up to 13!
I understand that low-GI foods are useful for keeping the sugar levels low but I haven't seen comprehensive lists anywhere (maybe I'm not looking hard enough). It would be great to know what foods to avoid as well, since it'll lead us in the right directions. The family GP has only provided vague instructions to eat less and spread the meals more evenly, but that's about it.
We've vowed to drop taking alcohol altogether, and to keep to regular exercises. Hope you can provide some thoughts. Thanks in advance.
This is a link that I've found, which is somewhat useful.

Diabetes Australia has a lot of good info about what is good and what is not.

THis link looked interesting.... http://www.diabetesaustralia.com.au/_li ... Aug_06.pdf

and here is an info page on food and what not (including what rice is best for you and info like that)

The list of their fact sheets - http://www.diabetesaustralia.com.au/edu ... heets.html

Good luck! I worry about this as well as my partner's dad has diabetes and needs to be careful too!

Thanks for those great links.
Also managed to found this decent one, with a large listing of GI levels for various foods:
