I found this interesting article on the BBC news website - How soup can help you lose weight
. I'd always heard that drinking soup can help you lose weight, but the theory of the time was that brothy soup was lower in calories than most solid foods so it resulted in fewer calories being eaten. Well now they have new research about why you lose weight by eating soup! They compared how long people felt full after eating soup and after eating a meal of the equivalent solid food and drinking the same amount of water. The people who ate soup stayed full on average for one and a half hours longer
than the solid meal group!
The reason is that after you eat a valve at the bottom of the stomach closes to keep the food there for digestion. Water passes straight through it. However if you blend the water and food to make a soup it's thick enough to be trapped in the stomach, keeping your stomach fuller for longer.
The article also has interesting information about the hunger hormone ghrelin and its contribution to weight gain.
I'm definitely going to be including at least one soup meal per day in my diet from now on!
