Baked Meatball in homemade Tomato Sauce Recipe

This Baked Meatball with Homemade Tomato Sauce recipe is one of our favourites. This recipe serves six, but even if you're cooking for less people than that, we suggest you use the suggested quantities because you'll want left overs to use the next day to make delicious meatball subs.

This recipe is a favourite of ours because it not only tastes great, it's low in fat and high in protein.

Healthy Dinner Recipe:  Baked Meatball in homemade Tomato Sauce Recipe

Recipe Serves:

This Recipe Serves 6.

Recipe Ingredients:

Meatballs

  • 250g pork mince
  • 250g beef mince
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs fresh or packet
  • 1 large onion diced
  • 1 egg
  • 1tbl worchestire sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • ¼ cup fresh herbs (parsley, thyme, oregano) or 2 teaspoons dried herbs
  • Pepper and Salt


Tomato Sauce

  • 2 (small) onion finely chopped
  • 3 short cut bacon strips
  • 10g (teaspoon) Olive Oil
  • 800g (1 can) diced tomato
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 20g (teaspoon) WORCESTERSHIRE sauce
  • 4 teaspoons brown sugar
  • Dried Oregano
  • Dried Marjoram
  • Cracked Pepper
  • 200g water

Recipe Method:

  1. Preheat oven to 200c. 
  2. Preheat pan and fry onion until softened, set aside until cooled.
  3. In a large bowl, place mince, egg, worchestire sauce, herbs, cooled onion, garlic and breadcrumbs.    With clean hands mix the ingredients altogether insuring everything is incorporated.
  4. Roll a tablespoon of the mixture into balls and place on plate, set aside.
  5.  Sauté Onion in Olive oil for 5 mins until softened.  Remove from heat then cook the diced short cut bacon until browned.
  6. Add the onion to the bacon then incorporate the worchestire sauce to the pan for around 30 seconds, keep stirring.
  7. Add the can of tomatoes and stir altogether, make sure heat is turned down to simmer.  Add garlic, sugar, pepper and herbs.  Keep simmering for around 5 mins, if too thick add the water.
  8. Place Meatballs into a baking dish pour over the tomato sauce and bake for 20-25 minutes until meatballs are cooked.  (after 10 mins turn balls over in the sauce).

Additional Comments:

Serve with your favourite pasta or for a change you can serve on mash potatoes or steamed rice with vegetables. Use any leftovers to make meatball subs by combining with your favourite rolls, lettuce and tomato.

You can substitue the homemade tomato sauce with your favourite commercial sauce to make this recipe even simpler to prepare.
