Steak Sandwich with Caramelised Onions Recipe

This steak sandwich recipe makes the best steak sandwiches we've ever tasted.

Protein is a vital part of any weight loss diet and this recipe is a great source of protein at nearly 52g per serve. Protein is a dieter's friend because, like fibre, it keeps us feeling fuller longer. Steak is also a great source of iron, which can often be lacking in our diets.

This recipe is low in saturated fats and a good source of protein.

Healthy Dinner Recipe:  Steak Sandwich with Caramelised Onions Recipe

Recipe Serves:

This Recipe Serves 2.

Recipe Ingredients:

  • 300g Eye Fillet Steak approx 1 inch thick (Rump or Porterhouse can be used)
  • Lettuce
  • 1 Tomato Sliced
  • 4 Onions sliced
  • Thick sliced Sour Dough Bread Toasted
  • Tablespoon Olive Oil
  • Teaspoon Balsamic Vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons brown sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons Low Fat Mayonnaise

Recipe Method:

  1.  Heat frypan with oil on med heat and cook sliced onions for 10 mins, watching that you don’t burn. 
  2. Once cooked down heat slightly and add sugar and balsamic vinegar stirring and cooking for a further 5 mins, season with salt & pepper.  Add a touch of water if drying out.  Once cooked set aside.
  3. Drizzle both sides of the steaks with olive oil and rub in. 
  4. Preheat a pan or grill on medium heat and grill for 3 mins each side for med.  Remove from heat and place on plate, season with salt and pepper then cover with foil for 5 mins.
  5. Slice steak on angle.
  6. Slice bread and lightly toast.  Layer bread with mayonnaise, tomato, Lettuce, steak.  Add onions on top.

Additional Comments:

As well being a healthy dinner recipe, this is equally a healthy lunch recipe. As an added treat, try serving these steak sandwiches with a fried egg and beetroot. If you're not a huge fan of mayonnaise, try replacing it with your favourite BBQ sauce.
