Mandie's Star Challenge Programme

Postby kate_turner2000 » Sat Nov 18, 2006 3:21 pm

My star challenge is based on the fact that I have a lot of trouble staying motivated, and need daily goals.

So every day, my goals are:
1. Calorie balance less than 1500 calories (I count using CalorieKing software, see

2. At least 30 minutes cardio exercise

When I achieve both 1 and 2, I earn a star!

It's my way of focusing on HEALTH, rather than the weight loss, because the scales and I have long since been enemies...

I will weigh in, at the end of the month.

I hope that's clear to everyone! If anyone else wants to try out the star method, please, go for it! I think it's great, I'm keeping motivated on it because I have a very clear goal each day.. and I know already I am healthier!

When these things become habit to me, I may up the ante and change the definition of a star - for example, at least 45 minutes exercise etc...

Anyone could give the Star Challenge a go, I haven't patented it and I promise I won't sue! Just make up your own definitions for a star and enjoy sticking them on your calendar!

--note to any mods... is there any chance I can make this a sticky and put it at the top of my personal progress thread or something, so new people can understand my crazy star thing? ta!

thanks Kate!

I should add as well - its important to make your own goals for the star. Make them achievable, but a bit of a challenge (does that make sense?).

For example, for me, a goal of eating under 2500 calories a day is silly, because I should always be eating well below that! And a goal of 1000 calories is unrealistic, because I will never manage it! 1500 is just right for me.

I also haven't included things like drinking water, because that is such a habit for me, but if you struggle to make your 2L a day you could make that part of your daily goal.

Good luck, I'd love to hear progress from Kylie and anyone else who does it! Don't forget to buy some star stickers and put them on your calendar.. it really does help! :D

star challenge

Postby tree » Wed Jan 03, 2007 11:47 am

Hey Mandie

I think this is a great idea. I bought a packet of gold stars on the way home from work so I could do this on my home calendar.

It worked already.
After dinner I was feeling a little "nibbly" but anything else to eat would have put me over my limit for the day. I really wanted the gold star so I resisted. I went and brushed my teeth, gave myself the star and went to bed!

Thanks for the suggestion!

That is great Tree....I know it really worked for Mandie...she is away at the moment and by now I think she should be in Vietnam! Mandie won't be back until March, but Kate keeps us updated on her progress!!

Glad you found the star program worthwhile and I know that Mandie would be glad that it has helped out too! Keep up the great work!
