A good general guide if you are overweight is basically eat half of what you usually eat. You will loose weight and will not be starving (be hungry yes...starve no). Use your hand as a guide to portion size. If your serve of something is bigger than what your hand can hold then generally it is too big.
A precise answer to your question is dependant on several variables: what is your gender, your height, your weight, are you losing weight or maintaining, how active you are and how much muscle you have. A simple google search should help you find a site with good thumbnail guide for your censored, height and activity etc.
I never bothered with counting calories. I watched portion size and try to stay away from unhealthy foods (read high calories - just had a general idea never an actual number of any particular food ie cream donut equals very high calories...so stay away from it).
