Make Time to Look After Yourself

Have you ever felt guilty spending time looking after yourself? Or have you ever thought that spending money to improve your health is a waste, or that you have better things to spend your, or the family’s money on?

If you have, you’re not alone. I’ve spoken to hundreds of people who have booked into our retreat, and many of these people have felt this way, or thought these things.

Many people think that their health isn’t as important as most of the other things in their lives, and as a result live with the consequences, including continuing to feel bad about themselves and living with low self-esteem.

If this sounds like you, it’s time to change the way you think about your health and your sense of worth, which doesn’t always come easy.

If you’d like to change the way you think, start by asking yourself this. What makes you think that your health and happiness is any less important than anyone else’s in your family?

Mums and dads typically put their kids first, and often put everything else first too. What many fail to realise is, that putting their health and happiness first has a great impact on the health and happiness of the rest of the family. It’s kind of like the theory of putting your own oxygen mask on before helping others with theirs on a plane that loses cabin pressure. If you try to help others and can’t breathe properly, you’ll end up not being able to help anyone.

When we feel good and we’re happy, the way we act and behave often makes the people around us feel good too.

And if we have lots of energy, we participate in more things and encourage others to participate as well. Wouldn’t you rather be the parent that can play with your kids and keep up with them, rather than the parent that can’t be bothered playing and gets exhausted relatively quickly?

And what about your performance at work? Many people don’t realise how much more productive you can be at work when you have lots of energy and a clear head.

People who are happy and healthy tend to have less mood swings and often don’t need to rely on snack and soda induced sugar highs to get them through the day.

It’s often understandable that parents put their children before themselves, but it’s less understandable when they put material things ahead of their health. For example, many people take better care of their cars than they do of themselves.
We all spend time, money and effort washing, cleaning and servicing our cars regularly. And we always make sure we put the right fuel in our cars.

Food is fuel for our body, and many of us continually feed our body with the wrong fuels.

Loving and taking care of yourself doesn’t make you selfish – it actually means that you value yourself and care enough about those around you to want to be your best.

You are more important than anything in the world and looking after yourself should not come second (or third or worse - ever further down the list).

Make time for yourself and as the saying goes – this is the only body you will ever have, so make sure it lasts!
