How It Works

The calculator uses current Australian pharmacy pricing for each medication at every dose level. It accounts for the dose escalation period (where you start on a lower, cheaper dose and gradually increase) and the maintenance period at the full dose. It also estimates telehealth consultation fees based on an initial consult plus quarterly follow-ups. PBS co-payment rates are $25.00 for general patients and $7.70 for concession card holders (from 1 January 2026).

Is Ozempic covered by the PBS for weight loss?

No. Ozempic is only PBS listed for type 2 diabetes with specific eligibility criteria, including inadequate blood sugar control despite other medications. Using Ozempic for weight loss alone requires a private prescription at the full price of $130-$200 per pen.

Are weight loss medications covered by private health insurance in Australia?

Most private health insurance policies in Australia do not cover the cost of weight loss medications. Some extras policies may partially cover GP or specialist consultations related to weight management, but the medication itself is typically an out-of-pocket expense.

What is the cheapest weight loss medication in Australia?

Contrave (naltrexone/bupropion) is the most affordable option at approximately $254 per month at the maintenance dose. It is an oral tablet taken twice daily and does not require injections. Can I get compounded semaglutide in Australia?

No. The Australian government banned the prescribing and dispensing of compounded semaglutide in October 2024 due to safety concerns, including reports of inconsistent potency. Patients must use branded Ozempic or Wegovy.

Do I need to pay for telehealth consultations separately?

Yes. Since November 2025, Medicare rebates for telehealth weight loss consultations are largely no longer available. Most consultations are fully out-of-pocket, typically costing $49-$150 for an initial consult and $35-$79 for follow-ups, depending on the provider.
