Adjustable Gastric BandOn average 50 to 60% of excess weight lost in the long term▼
The adjustable gastric band is made of soft silicone equipped with an inflatable balloon, positioned around the upper part of the stomach by keyhole surgery to create a small pouch. It induces weight loss by restricting food intake and slowing emptying of the pouch. The band has faded in popularity over the last 10 years due to reduced weight loss outcomes compared to other procedures.
One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass▼
An alternative form of gastric bypass also known as Omega Loop or 'mini' gastric bypass (MGB), performed laparoscopically. Both RYGB and OAGB result in excellent weight loss and resolution of associated conditions such as type 2 diabetes. In most cases Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is the preferred approach.
Revisional Surgery▼
For patients who experience weight regain despite making correct food choices after previous bariatric surgery. Adelaide Bariatric Centre has experience converting gastric bands to both sleeve gastrectomies and gastric bypasses laparoscopically, converting sleeve gastrectomies to gastric bypass, and restapling or endoscopically revising gastric bypasses.
Roux en Y Gastric BypassMedian weight loss at 12 months is 65 to 75% excess weight. Approximately 50% excess weight loss is maintained after 15 years.▼
Considered the 'gold standard' weight control operation, combining restriction with malabsorption for durable and significant weight loss. The stomach is bypassed so that food goes into a small gastric pouch and then into a loop of small bowel. It is the only operation shown to reduce mortality from obesity.
SADI-SWeight loss ranges from around 20% EWL in the first 3 months up to nearly 100% after 2 years in some studies▼
SADI-S stands for 'Single Anastomosis Duodeno–Ileal Bypass with Sleeve Gastrectomy'. A modified version of the Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch (BPD-DS), performed in 2 steps: sleeve gastrectomy removing 85% of the stomach, then the duodenum is detached and reconnected to small bowel 2 metres downstream. Preliminary studies suggest it provides greater weight loss than a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy.
