Procedure Information

Gastric Sleeve
65 to 70% of excess weight over twelve to eighteen months

The laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy involves removal of approximately 80% of the stomach. The surgery works by restriction (smaller stomach) and complex metabolic (gastrointestinal hormonal changes). The end result is less hunger and earlier satiety/fullness with food.

Hospital stay: 2-3 daysRecovery: 2-4 weeks
Mini Gastric Bypass (OAGB)
30 to 40% weight loss or up to 80% excess weight loss over about 18 months

The One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass (OAGB) is a minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure. The surgeon creates a small tube-like stomach pouch detached from the rest of the stomach, which is then connected to the intestine, bypassing up to 200cm of the small bowel. Weight loss is achieved through both the restrictive effect of the small pouch and the metabolic effect of bypassing the small intestine.

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB)
75% of excess weight

The RYGB is a laparoscopic bariatric procedure that works with a more profound metabolic and restrictive component than the Sleeve Gastrectomy. Most of the stomach and part of the small intestine is completely bypassed. Hunger hormones are reduced and satiety hormones increased. It is considered the gold standard of weight loss surgery.

Gastric Band Explantation

Surgery to remove a laparoscopic adjustable gastric band (LAGB), which may be necessary due to complications or side effects such as band slippage, erosion, infection, discomfort, or undesirable weight loss.

Spatz 3 Intragastric Adjustable Balloon
10 to 15kg in 6 months

A non-surgical, temporary procedure where a balloon device is placed into the stomach endoscopically for up to 6 months. It is indicated for those with a BMI of 30 and over. The balloon is inserted through the mouth under heavy sedation, guided into the stomach, and filled.

Revisional Surgery

A secondary bariatric procedure for patients having trouble with their original weight loss surgery or struggling with weight regain. Options may include Sleeve Gastrectomy and Mini Gastric Bypass, including band to bypass and band to sleeve conversions.

Who can get weight loss surgery?
Weight loss surgery is an effective treatment for people who are struggling with obesity and/or experiencing other medical complications, such as obstructive sleep apnoea, coronary artery disease, type 2 diabetes, fatty liver, osteoarthritis/joint pain, cancers and decreased fertility. How long will recovery take?
You should expect to stay in hospital for two to three days after bariatric surgery. You should make arrangements for someone to take you home. It's also recommended to have someone at home to help you for the first five to seven days after surgery with tasks like cooking, laundry, housework and caring for children. Most patients return to work two to four weeks after bariatric surgery.
How quickly will I lose weight?
Most patients experience a weight loss of 65 to 75% of excess weight over a period of 12 to 18 months.
What lifestyle changes will I need to make?
Bariatric surgery results in a substantially reduced stomach capacity, which will help you reduce the volume of food that you eat. You may have to eliminate some foods and drinks from your diet altogether. For some patients, this can be mentally challenging, so we partner with allied health professionals to provide ongoing support on your weight loss journey before and after your bariatric surgery.
