Procedure Information

Sleeve Gastrectomy

A laparoscopic procedure that removes about two thirds of the stomach to leave a 200ml stomach tube (or sleeve) instead of a 2 litre stomach sac. It is not reversible. Weight loss occurs because patients generally feel full after smaller meals due to the reduced stomach size, and the smaller stomach also produces less of the hormone ghrelin, which is involved in hunger regulation.

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
Median weight loss at 12 months is 60-70% of a patient's excess weight. Approximately 50% excess weight loss is maintained after 15 years post-operatively.

The operation involves creating a small gastric pouch of about 50ml and connecting it to a section of the small bowel (the jejunum), so that food bypasses most of the stomach. It is not a pancreaticobiliary or intestinal bypass. Weight is lost through early fullness from the small pouch, prevention of over-eating, intolerance to sweets (dumping), and suppression of appetite through hormonal effects.

Single Anastomosis Gastric Bypass

A variation of gastric bypass that uses one join in the intestine. The surgery involves creating a small, tubular stomach pouch and connecting it directly to a loop of the small intestine, bypassing a portion of the digestive tract. SAGB is generally less complex than the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, involving fewer surgical steps and potentially shorter operating time. However, it may not be suitable for patients with acid reflux or GORD.

Hernia Repair

Hernia repair is usually performed as an inpatient surgery with an overnight stay in the hospital. The operation may be performed as an "open" or "keyhole" (laparoscopic) surgery. In open hernia repair, a large incision is made on the groin or abdomen and the bulge is pushed back into place.

Hospital stay: Overnight stay
Laparoscopic Fundoplication

Anti-reflux surgery to treat gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD or GERD). This procedure reinforces the valve between the stomach and oesophagus by wrapping the upper part of the stomach around the lower oesophagus. It's usually done laparoscopically, with a short stay in hospital.

Hospital stay: Short stay in hospital
Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy

Gallbladder removal is performed through small keyhole incisions and is most often used for gallstone-related issues. Patients generally stay one night in hospital and take some time at home to recover.

Hospital stay: One night

Frequently Asked Questions

Does private health insurance cover weight loss surgery?
Cover varies between funds and policies. Some policies include item numbers for weight loss surgery, and others list them as exclusions, so it's worth checking your policy before booking. Common item numbers include 31575 for sleeve gastrectomy and 31572, 31581, 31584 for gastric bypass. If your policy doesn't include the cover you need, you may need to upgrade and serve a waiting period, or consider self-funding.
Are payment plans available?
Some patients choose to use a payment plan through Total Lifestyle Credit (TLC). They're the only patient-funding platform sanctioned by AHPRA and offer finance options through an online application. You also have the option of applying to access your superannuation early to pay for surgery.
How will my food intake change after surgery?
Changes to eating habits happen in stages, and they can vary depending on the type of surgery you have. You'll review all the information about these stages with the team before your procedure, so you'll know what the first few weeks look like and how your intake progresses over time. This gives you a clear idea of what to expect during the early recovery period.
Does weight loss from surgery last long term?
Long-term outcomes can be different for everyone. Surgery is only one part of the process, and your follow-up appointments help you build habits that contribute to more sustainable weight loss over time.
Will surgery help me improve my quality of life?
Quality of life is personal and can be influenced by many factors outside of surgery. Your follow-up care gives you time to check in, discuss changes, and make any adjustments you may want along the way.

75% cure rate of Type II Diabetes following gastric bypass

Currently, it is the only operation that has been shown to reduce mortality in the morbidly obese.

The operation can be done at an acceptable mortality (0.5-1.0%) in this high-risk group. Morbidity is low with few post-operative side-effects and few nutritional deficiencies.

As a consequence of the weight loss, there is a reduced risk of obesity-related complications such as diabetes, lipid abnormalities, sleep apnoea, etc.
