Procedure Information
Gastric Banding (Lap Band Surgery)▼
A Gastric band (also known as lap band surgery) is an adjustable and reversible surgical procedure that involves placing a silicone band around the top part of the stomach. The intention behind the band is to slow down the entry of food intake into the main part of the stomach and as a result patients feel much fuller after consuming a small portion of food. The gastric band is the only adjustable weight loss surgery with a diameter adjustable for a customized weight-loss rate.
Sleeve Gastrectomy▼
Sleeve gastrectomy is a minimally invasive surgery which involves removing 80% of the stomach, reducing it from approximately 700ml to 100ml. The gastric sleeve surgery causes hormonal changes that assist in weight loss by removing the section of the stomach which produces most of the ghrelin "hunger hormone", so patients often feel less hungry between meals, as well as limiting the amount of food the patient can eat to approximately a cup of food.
Roux En Y Gastric Bypass▼
A gastric bypass is a restrictive surgical procedure that decreases the size of the stomach from approximately 400ml to a small pouch of about 50ml. The small bowel is divided approximately 50cm downstream from the stomach and connected to the stomach pouch, routing food past most of the stomach and the first part of the small intestine. It has been associated with higher long-term weight loss and slightly lower weight regain than the sleeve gastrectomy, and has the highest resolution of T2DM, hypertension and sleep apnoea.
Mini Gastric Bypass▼
A mini gastric bypass is less invasive than the traditional gastric bypass. It is an updated version that does not involve removing part of the stomach, making it a reversible treatment. Risks of certain complications such as leaks and internal hernias are also reduced because only one connection is needed instead of the traditional two. The primary benefits are that they offer results comparable to a traditional gastric bypass through a shorter and less invasive surgical procedure.
