Procedure Information
Gastric Sleeve (Sleeve Gastrectomy)Up to 60–70% of excess weight▼
The sleeve gastrectomy is one of the most performed weight loss procedures in Australia. The surgery involves removing up to 90% of the stomach and limits food intake which helps you feel full sooner.
Gastric Bypass (Roux-en-Y)Up to 65–80% of excess weight▼
A gastric bypass reduces stomach size and reroutes part of the small intestine to limit calorie absorption. It's particularly effective for people with type 2 diabetes or those needing revision surgery.
Gastric Balloon10–20kg on average▼
A non-surgical option, the gastric balloon is a temporary device placed in the stomach to reduce appetite and portion sizes. No surgery required. Removed after 6 months. Self-funded (not covered by Medicare or insurance).
Gastric Band (Lap Band Surgery)Up to 50–60% of excess weight▼
A reversible option, the gastric band involves placing a silicone ring around the upper stomach to reduce intake and slow digestion. Adjustable and reversible. Less commonly performed today.
Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG)20–25kg on average▼
A minimally invasive alternative, ESG reshapes the stomach from within using an endoscope, with no external incisions. Suitable for those with BMI <35. Self-funded with limited long-term data.
