Procedure Information

Gastric Sleeve
60–70% of excess weight

The gastric sleeve, also known as the vertical sleeve gastrectomy, is a restrictive weight loss surgery procedure. During surgery, about 85% of the existing stomach is removed leaving a portion of the stomach that is about the size and shape of a banana, or sleeve. The new capacity of the stomach ranges from about 60 to 150 cc.

Recovery: Most patients return to light office work within 1–2 weeks. A full return to strenuous exercise usually takes 4–6 weeks.
SIPS/SADI-S Bariatric Surgery
80–90% of excess weight

SIPS is an effective weight loss procedure. It also has a beneficial effect on diabetes. It has the strongest metabolic and weight-loss effect for higher BMI or severe diabetes.

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
70–80% of excess weight

Designed to restrict food intake by removing a part of the stomach, gastric bypass helps patients achieve and maintain weight loss. This is the gold standard in bariatric surgery. It also helps tackle obesity related health issues such as diabetes, sleep apnoea, hypertension and others. It reduces stomach size and reroutes intestines; great for reflux and diabetes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I eligible for weight-loss surgery in Perth?
Eligibility depends on your BMI, existing medical conditions, weight-related health risks, and previous attempts at weight loss. We assess every patient individually to recommend the safest and most effective option.
How long does weight-loss surgery take, and how soon can I return to work?
Most bariatric procedures take 60–90 minutes. Many patients return to light work within 1–2 weeks, depending on the procedure and job type.
What is included in your aftercare program?
Our two-year aftercare program includes: Surgeon follow-ups, Dietitian support, Psychology sessions, Exercise physiology guidance, Ongoing nutritional monitoring. This comprehensive support improves long-term success and safety.
Do I need private health insurance for bariatric surgery?
Private insurance significantly reduces costs. Most Gold-tier policies cover bariatric surgery after a 12-month waiting period. Self-funded options are also available.
How much weight can I expect to lose after surgery?
This depends on the procedure, but patients typically lose: Sleeve gastrectomy: 60–70% of the excess weight. Gastric bypass: 70–80% of the excess weight. SIPS/SADI-S: 80–90% of the excess weight. Weight loss occurs most rapidly in the first 6–12 months.
What is the difference between a gastric sleeve, bypass, and SADI?
Sleeve: Removes part of the stomach; simplest surgery. Bypass: Reduces stomach size + reroutes intestines; great for reflux and diabetes. SADI: Strongest metabolic and weight-loss effect for higher BMI or severe diabetes. Your surgeon will recommend the best fit for your health and goals.
How much weight can I expect to lose in the first 12 months?
Most patients lose 60–70% of their excess weight within the first year, especially when they follow structured dietitian guidance and the recommended lifestyle program.
Is the gastric sleeve reversible?
No. The portion of the stomach removed during surgery cannot be restored, making the gastric sleeve a non-reversible procedure.
