Procedure Information

Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is a surgical weight-loss procedure in which the stomach is reduced to about 25% of its original size, by surgical removal of a large portion of the stomach, following the major curve. The open edges are then attached together to form a sleeve or tube with a banana shape. The procedure permanently reduces the size of the stomach and is not reversible.

Gastric Bypass Surgery

Laparoscopic gastric bypass is a weight loss or 'bariatric' procedure which can help patients who are significantly obese. It includes three different operations (Roux-En-Y, Loop; SIPS SADI). All three variations are characterised by a reduction in the size of the stomach by stapling or removing part of this organ, plus a change in the ability of the small bowel to absorb nutrients (called 'malabsorption'). This results in suppressed hunger and reduced stomach capacity which enable significant weight loss.

Gastric Banding

Laparoscopic Gastric Banding also referred to as 'Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding' (LAGB) or Lap Band, is a weight loss or 'bariatric' procedure which can help patients who are significantly obese. Surgery however is generally only recommended where other non-surgical weight loss methods have not worked. Laparoscopic Gastric Banding induces weight loss by reducing the capacity of the stomach, which in turn restricts the amount of food that can be consumed. It has been highly successful in the treatment for morbid obesity.

SASI-S (Single Anastomosis Stomach-Ileal Bypass with Sleeve Gastrectomy)
up to 80-90% excess weight

SASI-S is a new weight loss bariatric surgery which combines the benefits of sleeve gastrectomy and intestinal bypass. The surgery removes 75% of the stomach, which is great for weight loss patients as they benefit from eating less and experience less hunger, due to lower levels of ghrelin. The procedure is a two-step process beginning with a sleeve gastrectomy, then joining the antrum (lower stomach) to the distal section of the small intestine.

Hospital stay: a few days
SADI-S (Single Anastomosis Duodeno-Ileal Bypass with Sleeve Gastrectomy)

Single Anastomosis Duodeno-Ileal Bypass (SADI-S), also known as Stomach Intestinal Pylorus-Sparing Surgery (SIPS) is a newer modified version of the duodenal switch bariatric surgery. SADI-S surgery combines the benefits of sleeve gastrectomy and intestinal bypass. The benefit of SADI-S is that only one bypass is made instead of two, which has its benefits.

Revisional Weight Loss Surgery

Revisional weight loss surgery is a secondary procedure for those who have already undergone a form of weight loss surgery but require a second operation. Some patients may have experienced lifestyle changes, some may have not lost enough excess weight the first time, and others may seek the procedure due to unresolved health concerns or complications with the initial weight loss surgery.

Allurion Balloon Program
On average patients lose 10 to 15kg of weight in just 16 weeks

The Allurion Balloon, formerly known as the Elipse Balloon, is a new approach to weight loss, designed to assist you in reducing your food consumption. This soft balloon is the first gastric balloon that requires no surgery, endoscopy, or anesthesia for placement or removal. The balloon is designed to assist you in reducing your food consumption by taking up space in your stomach.

Weight Loss Surgery (General)
up to 70% of excess body weight

Obesity is not just being overweight. It can affect your organs and overall health, as well as be a contributing factor for diabetes, back and joint pain, sleep apnoea, and other conditions. Weight loss surgery helps you lose up to 70% of excess body weight, giving your health and energy back.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is SASI-S surgery?
The SASI-S weight loss surgery is a two-step procedure, beginning with a sleeve gastrectomy. The stomach is reduced to a small portion of its original size by surgically removing up to 75% of the stomach. The result of a sleeve gastrectomy is a tube-like stomach structure. The next step is joining the antrum (lower stomach) to the distal section of the small intestine, the ileum. Bypass length will be determined by the amount of weight loss that is required. This means that about half of the...
What are the advantages of SASI-S?
Combines the benefits of the sleeve and bypass surgeries. Reduces your hunger levels. Reduced absorption of fats, calories and sugars. Access to the bile duct remains (ERCP). Reduced risk of internal hernia. Reduced risk of nutritional deficiencies.
What are the disadvantages of SASI-S?
Increased risk of bile reflux. Risk of an ulcer at the join between the stomach and lower bowel. Weight loss may be less than the SADI-S procedure.
Is SASI-S weight loss surgery safe?
As with any invasive surgical procedures, there are risks such as bleeding, infection and others. There are also risks associated with weight loss surgery, such as infection, leaking and malabsorption (dietary supplements will be required). Dr Stephen Watson and his team will cover all of the risks during an initial consultation.
How much weight can be lost from the SASI-S surgery?
The results of the SASI-S procedure are different for every patient; however, you may be able to lose up to 80-90% excess weight if you follow the instructions of your surgeon and dietician.
Am I a candidate for weight loss surgery or procedures?
The Gastric Band System may be right for you if: You are at least 18 years old. Your BMI is 30 or higher. You have been overweight for more than 5 years. Your serious attempts to lose weight have had only short-term success. You do not have any other disease that may have caused your obesity. You are prepared to make substantial changes in your eating habits and lifestyle. You are willing to continue being monitored by the specialist who is treating you. You do not drink alcohol in excess. If...
