Procedure Information

Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Most common weight loss surgery done. Involves reduction of hunger hormone "Ghrelin".

Gastric Bypass Surgery (Roux-en-Y)
60-80% of excess weight within the first 12 to 18 months

A small stomach pouch is created. The small bowel is divided so that the first part of the bowel is by-passed, and the remainder of the small bowel is attached to the newly formed pouch. This means food bypasses part of the stomach and small intestine, leading to decreased calorie absorption and a reduction in hunger.

Recovery: 2 to 4 weeks
Laparoscopic Mini Gastric Bypass

The first step is to create a small stomach pouch. This is connected (anastomosed) to the intestine, bypassing between 1.5m to 2m of the part of the proximal intestine.

Gastric Balloon

The Gastric Balloon is a soft, saline filled silicone balloon that is temporarily inserted into the stomach without surgery, giving you a feeling of fullness. It will make you feel less hungry and feel fuller more quickly after small meals.

Revisional Bariatric Surgery

Includes Gastric Sleeve to Roux En-y Gastric Bypass / Mini-gastric Bypass, and Gastric Band to Roux En-y Gastric Bypass / Mini-gastric Bypass.

Gastric Band Surgery

A form of weight loss surgery where a surgeon places a specialised band around the stomach. The band temporarily divides your stomach into two pouches, reducing its volume and helping you feel full.

Hiatal Hernia & Anti Reflux Surgery

The surgery fixes hiatal hernia and creates an anti-reflux effect (can have part of this done together with weight loss surgery). No permanent weight loss component.

Frequently Asked Questions

What foods should I avoid immediately after gallbladder surgery?
After gallbladder surgery, avoid high-fat, greasy, fried, and heavily processed foods, as they can be harder to digest during early recovery. Choosing lighter meals helps reduce discomfort while your body adjusts.
Will my flexibility and mobility improve after gastric sleeve surgery?
Yes, after gastric sleeve surgery in Melbourne, losing excess weight reduces strain on your joints, helping you move more comfortably and making everyday activities easier. Many patients notice a gradual improvement in flexibility and overall physical ease.
Who is Monica Devanand, and what does she focus on?
Monica Devanand is a Habits and Transformation Coach who helps patients achieve sustainable weight loss and wellness goals. Her approach goes beyond diet and exercise, supporting a holistic lifestyle that includes healthy habits, movement, and a positive relationship with food.
How does laparoscopic surgery help with GERD?
Laparoscopic GERD surgery uses small incisions and specialised instruments to repair or strengthen the lower oesophageal sphincter, reducing acid reflux. This minimally invasive approach limits tissue trauma, speeds recovery, and leaves smaller scars. Suitability depends on the severity of reflux, overall health, and lifestyle factors, and the decision is made after a thorough medical evaluation.
What nutrient deficiencies are common after bariatric surgery?
After bariatric surgery in Melbourne, patients may develop deficiencies in important nutrients, including iron, protein, vitamin B12, folate, vitamin D, and zinc. These nutrients are essential for energy, bone health, and overall recovery. Following your surgeon's supplement plan and regular blood tests helps prevent complications and supports long-term well-being.
What is the expected weight loss after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass?
After Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, patients can expect to lose 60% to 80% of their excess weight within the first 12 to 18 months, with long-term maintenance depending on adherence to a healthy lifestyle. Dr. Niruben Rajasagaram works closely with patients to ensure they achieve optimal results through regular follow-ups and detailed advice.
How long is the recovery period after gastric bypass surgery?
Recovery time for Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery typically takes 2 to 4 weeks. Most patients can return to work within 2 weeks if their job does not involve heavy physical activity. Full recovery, including physical and dietary adjustments, may take several months, and Dr. Niruben provides continuous support during this period.
Is Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery reversible?
Yes, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery is reversible. The procedure involves creating a smaller stomach and rerouting the small intestine, which results in permanent changes to your digestive system. It's essential to thoroughly discuss the procedure with Dr. Niruben Rajasagaram to ensure you fully understand the long-term commitment involved.
