Procedure Information
Sleeve GastrectomyAverage of 60% excess weight out to 5 years▼
A Sleeve Gastrectomy involves removing approximately two thirds of the stomach through keyhole surgery effectively turning the stomach, which is like a big bag normally into a tube. The biggest advantage is that there is no foreign device to fail or cause obstruction and there is no major alteration in the gastro-intestinal tract. The procedure also removes the part of the stomach that secretes Ghrelin, a hormone that plays a major role in determining how hungry we get.
Gastric BypassAverage of 65 to 70% excess weight loss out to 10 years▼
Laparoscopic gastric bypass is largely a restrictive procedure but there is also a degree of malabsorption which does help with overall weight loss. It involves creating a small pouch from the upper stomach and then connecting this to the small bowel. Two types are performed: single anastomosis gastric bypass and roux en Y gastric bypass. Around 80% of non-insulin diabetic patients will leave hospital following their surgery without any diabetic medication.
SADI-S▼
The SADI procedure combines a Sleeve Gastrectomy with Bypass of the small intestine. Dr France introduced this procedure in 2019 after traveling to New York and Madrid to gain specialist training.
Revisional Surgery▼
Revisional surgery for people who have had previous weight loss surgery, including patients who have previously had a laparoscopic gastric band and had to have it removed or have not had sufficient weight loss. These patients may be suitable for conversion to laparoscopic gastric bypass.
