Procedure Information
Sleeve GastrectomyAround 30% of total body weight, or between 60-70% of excess body weight. Maximum weight loss usually achieved between 12-18 months.▼
Also known as Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy or Gastric Sleeve, this is the most commonly performed bariatric surgery in Australia. Around 80% of the original stomach is removed, leaving a new smaller stomach with a volume of around 100mL. No surgery is performed on the intestine.
One Anastomosis Gastric BypassAround 35% of total body weight, or between 70-80% of excess body weight. Maximum weight loss usually achieved between 12-18 months.▼
Previously known as mini gastric bypass (MGB), omega loop gastric bypass, or single anastomosis gastric bypass. A small gastric pouch of approximately 60mL is formed using the upper right corner of the stomach, and a loop of small bowel is connected to it with a single anastomosis. The bypassed intestine length is usually between 150 and 200cm.
Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass▼
A gastric bypass procedure listed as a surgical option, described as having more powerful metabolic effects and being a better option for diabetes and higher weights.
Gastric Band Removal▼
Removal of a previously placed gastric band.
Revisional Bariatric Surgery▼
Second and subsequent bariatric operations for patients who develop issues with their original bariatric procedure. Options include revision sleeve gastrectomy, revision one anastomosis gastric bypass or revision roux-en-y gastric bypass. Carries higher surgical risk compared to equivalent primary bariatric surgery due to scar tissue, altered tissue blood supply and decreased tissue integrity.
