    Procedure Information

    Gastric Sleeve

Also known as laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, this procedure removes roughly three-quarters of the stomach using keyhole techniques. The remaining stomach becomes a narrow "sleeve" with a capacity of about 100–200 ml, helping you feel full after small meals and naturally eat less. It's one of the most common and successful bariatric procedures.

    Gastric Bypass

This procedure involves creating a small stomach pouch and connecting it to a section of the small intestine further downstream. The pouch restricts food intake, while bypassing the first part of the intestine reduces calorie absorption — both working together to promote significant weight loss.

    Revisional Surgery

Revisional bariatric surgery options are available. A free consultation with the Bariatric Navigator is offered to explore needs and discuss revisional options.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Am I a candidate for weight-loss surgery?
BMI can be confusing, so we often talk about weight instead. Bariatric surgery is generally considered for people who need to lose more than 25 kg. Each case is unique, so we recommend booking an appointment to discuss your individual situation.
What types of weight-loss procedures do you offer?
Gastric Sleeve: Also known as laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, this procedure removes roughly three-quarters of the stomach using keyhole techniques. The remaining stomach becomes a narrow "sleeve" with a capacity of about 100–200 ml, helping you feel full after small meals and naturally eat less. Gastric Bypass: This procedure involves creating a small stomach pouch and connecting it to a section of the small intestine further...
Do you offer weight-loss medications or injectables?
When lifestyle changes alone aren't enough — especially if medical conditions make weight loss harder — our tailored plans may help. You may be a candidate if you're carrying excess weight along with conditions like high blood pressure or sleep apnoea, if cravings and constant hunger are derailing your efforts, or if you need additional support post-surgery.
What can I expect at the initial consultation?
Dr Ian Baxter – Surgical Consultation: In your first appointment with Dr Baxter, you'll discuss your weight-loss goals and find out which procedures may be suitable. He'll explain the pros and cons, offer his recommendation, and discuss expected results. Our Bariatric Navigator will then guide you through any necessary tests, paperwork (such as early superannuation release, if applicable), and answer any further questions. Dr Jess McEwan – Medical Weight-Loss Consultation: Dr McEwan will...
How much does surgery cost and what are the payment options?
Our team-based support and surgical consultation typically range from $5,000 to $7,000, depending on your individual plan and the procedure recommended. Hospital fees are separate — at Buderim Private and Sunshine Coast University Private Hospitals, these currently average around $14,000. If you don't have private health insurance, you may be eligible to use your superannuation to fund surgery. Our team can assist you with this process.
Will my private health insurance or Medicare cover weight-loss surgery?
Coverage varies by provider. Some health funds do not include bariatric surgery in their policies. We can help you understand your level of cover and discuss available options. Medicare rebates may apply to consultation fees with a valid referral.
How long is the recovery and when can I go back to work?
Most patients can return to light duties within two weeks of surgery, but this depends on the procedure, your overall health, and your job type. Physically demanding roles may require a longer break. Your surgeon will provide tailored advice.
Will weight-loss surgery help with other medical conditions?
Yes. Weight-loss surgery often improves or even resolves many obesity-related health issues. Studies show that approximately 80% of conditions like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and sleep apnoea improve or resolve within one year of successful surgery. Results vary by individual and depend on the type of surgery and adherence to post-operative lifestyle changes.
